Demonstation of the Spirit's Power! 5th Sunday after Epiphany Feb. 6, 2011

1 Corinthians 2: "When I came to you, I did not come with eloquence or human wisdom as I proclaimed to you the testimony about God. For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified. I came to you in weakness with great fear and trembling. My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit’s power, so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power."

Today, we look at the truth of St. Paul's words in his 1st letter to the Church in Corinth where he explains how we are to be "Salt and Light," as we hear in the Gospel lesson. I love to hear what Paul shares about how he preached the good news in Corinth. He says, "I did not preach with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power." This is what I so long for, with a passion, to see this happen in our 21st Century church as in the 1st century church! Paul says that we will be much less effective if we just use words! His challenge is for us to model his behavior and rely on the Holy Scriptures and the promises the Lord makes to us in John 14:11-13
11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. 12 Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. 13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
This is what we hold on to as we share the good news from our HEART and not just our mind "so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power." May it be so among us!
